When I first got the PS4, I was a little underwhelmed by the third-party apps that they had available on launch – where were the more popular apps that were on the PS3 such as YouTube and 4OD? They had other services like 5 On Demand, but seriously; who watches Channel 5 these days?
Anyway, it more than surprised me that the PS4 didn’t have a YouTube app – it’s something that a lot of people don’t think about these days because YouTube is installed by default on most of our devices (smart TVs, Smart Phones, Gaming Systems). I thought YouTube were being slow to the mark but, of course, they’ve got a trick up their sleeve. All you need to do is navigate to the Internet browser on your PS4 then head over to http://www.YouTube.com/TV – it’s a website that’s identical to its PS3 app. All you need to do then is press the Square button on your controller to make it full screen and you’re away to watch funny videos of cats for hours on end!
Apparently this will work on other devices that don’t have a YouTube app too – its YouTube’s backup plan while they create apps for each platform! Another benefit to YouTube TV is that videos will run in the background, allowing PS4 users to browse other websites at the same time! It has one of my favourite features too – the ability to pair devices. What does this mean? Well if you’re not a fan of typing using a DualShock 4 controller (which I’m definitely not) then you can pair your smartphone to your PS4 and send YouTube videos from your phone to your PS4 instantly! It makes the whole searching process a lot less laborious.
I think YouTube have a good thing going with this service. It works the exact same as the PS3 app and with the Pairing functionality, this is pretty much as good as it can get for YouTube on a console! The only thing I’d love to be able to do is create a shortcut to the website on my XMB menu for easier access. Ah well, it’ll do until they release the app!
