LoveFilm – Netflix’s biggest competitor has announced that it’s stopping its game rental service. Before today, you could choose any game in their collection and they would send it to you for as long as you desired. It was a pretty cool service that I’ve used and loved in the past (before I made the move to Netflix like many others!).
There were rumours before the official announcement from LoveFilm, who has today informed everyone that “We are no longer offering games rental packages to either new customers, or those who wish to change from a non-games package”. It doesn’t say what’s going to happen to members that have the game rentals package though, which is interesting. Will they continue to be able to access the service? No one knows as of yet.
They go on to say “In order to give the best possible service that we can, we are looking to focus on our strength, which is providing the best selection of film and TV content for our customers, and making it available whenever and wherever you want it”. Recently, LoveFilm has secured a number of exclusive streaming deals as they set up to battle with other companies like Netflix and NowTV.
Are you upset about LoveFilm’s decision? I for one am, especially after the demise of Blockbusters. It means that there are fewer places to rent games instead of buying them, which is what I’m more inclined to doing (especially if I pay £45 for a game and complete it in 1-2 days).
