Today at WMC (World Mobile Congress) Asus finally announced shipping details of its PadFone 2 – an Android phone and Tablet docking system. The idea behind the PadFone was to be able to use your phone as you normally would, but then have the opportunity to plug it into a tablet docking station to upscale your phone to a tablet when needed, all whilst charging the phone. If having a tablet/phone in sync with each other isn’t cool enough, the PadFone’s tablet stylus doubles up as a handset if someone calls you whilst your phone is docked!
Anyway, that was the original PadFone and it never got released in the UK. That’s all changed with today’s announcement directly from Asus who stated that the PadFone 2 will be available to preorder in the UK on March 1st with a price of £599.
The PadFone 2 offers a 4.7″ 720p HD display smartphone and a 10.1″ tablet dock sporting a 1280 x 800 resolution. All the intelligence comes from the phone though, with the tablet just being a display and a battery. The phone packs a Quad-Core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro 1.5GHz Processor and a whopping 2GB of RAM. Camera wise, we’re talking 13mp back camera that is capable of 1080p video recording – no mention of a front camera or its MP but I think it’s safe to assume a VGA camera to use for Skype or other video calling apps. It also boasts a 32GB internal memory but again, no talk of whether that’s upgradable or not.
According to Asus, docking your phone into the tablet will expand your battery power by x3 which is handy for those power users. When docked, the tablet weighs a whopping 649g – to put that into perspective, it’s only 3g lighter than the iPad 4 with its infamously heavy retina display; something that the Asus display doesn’t have.
Does that not tickle your pickle? Well, Asus have also announced the Asus PadFone Infinity – the same concept except with a 5″ 1080p display and brand new Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 chipset in the phone. It’s going to be a bit more expensive than the PadFone 2 though, currently priced at £799 with no release date confirmed.
